Roots
Osunlade is a house DJ and music producer. This shaman-looking DJ with Christian Warren as his real name was born on March 13, 1969 in St Louis, Missouri, USA, which is home to Miles Davis and Chuck Berry. He first got in touch with his first instrument, piano, at the age of seven, and soon drums, bass and guitar followed. He was the president of his school band and playing trumpet, The major milestone of his life was at 17, when he left his native St Louis and embarked on a journey to Los Angeles. There Osunlade successfully impressed Tony ‘Mickey’ Basil and was offered a music score composer role for a b-movie titled “Rockula” and also for Sesame Street.

Where you might have heard him
After international success at such a young age, Osunlade’s music career has never been the same. He started to work for major labels, producing scores for other artists; some of them are Gerardo “Rico Suave” (1991), Freddie Jackson “Was It Something” (1994) and Nadirah Shakoor “Love Song” (2006), but only to find himself feeling like losing his passion for music, because the artists are still the ones that claimed most credits. That spurred him to found his own label called Yoruba Records in 1999 with a great focus in its integrity and spiritual connection, so as to not to let material benefits take precedence over spiritual ones. Osunlade himself is an ordained priest of Ifá, a Yoruban way of life. His debut album dropped in 2001 titled Paradigm caused quite a stir amongst the house scene followers, making people refer to him as the master of ancestral house music. He has been in and out of USA, has moved to London, Greece and Puerto Rico among others for quite a number of years while playing in various clubs in town all over. Yoruba Records also runs a radio show, which regularly features Yoruba Soul Radio signature series, which is available for free on its website.

Justin Martin | Woo bar | Friday 12 April

Roots
Justin Martin is an American DJ and dance music producer. He was born in Vermont on May 1, 1975, and is now living in San Francisco, California. Justin was a college ice hockey player prior to becoming a DJ, he even got called up for NHL entry draft by the Los Angeles Kings in 1993. Ten years down the road, Justin awakened his passion for dance music which he always kept since he was banging pots and pans at the age of two. Justin Martin’s transition from being an ice hockey player into a pro DJ is probably one of the more remarkable DJ stories we’ve heard.

Where you might have heard him
In 2003, Justin made his breakthrough with his first record, The Sad Piano, which was released under Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly label. Several high-ranked DJs such as Derrick Carter and Pete Tong played the track over and over again and it soon found itself in the spotlight. It was also included into Steve Bug’s Bugnology compilation by Poker Flat. Justin left a remarkable impression on Dirtybird Records’ first four releases and followed with a chain of solo EPs. Together with his brother, Christian Martin, they formed The Martin Brothers, under which hits like “Stoopit” and “Dum” were released. He also impressed the world with his remixes of Radiohead’s “Nude”, Marshall Jefferson’s “Mushrooms”, and TG’s “Revox”. He has performed at Exit Festival (Belgrade), Sonar (Barcelona), Panorama Bar (Berlin), and several others. Some of his most notable works include Chaos Restored mix series and a DJ mix for Ministry of Sound’s Underground series compilation.

Chris Fortier | Mint | Saturday 06 April

Roots
Chris Fortier is an American DJ from Melbourne, Florida who currently is based out of the tiny island village of New York.  Before delving into the nocturnal art of Djing in 1990, he was a surfer. Chris has used many monikers including Fade and 40oz and was introduced into the EDM scene by friends who were DJs. He started his first residency at Aahz nightclub in Orlando. In 1993, Chris and Neil Kolo founded a music label called Fade Records and released their first track as a duo called “…For All the People” one year later.

Where you might have heard him
Two years after Fade Records was founded, Chris stretched his limits to establish another label called Balance Record Pool. He has done a number of singles, remixes and compilations, either by himself or through collaboration with renowned names like Joel Mull, Ed Davenport and Mark Broom. His well-known remix of Delerium’s “Silence” even reached one million copies sold online. Chris’ love for New York City’s underground house music scene has also produced albums and  EPs, such as Balance 007 (2005) and As Long as the Moment Exists (2007). Standing strong and steady at the top of his 20-year-long career, Chris has garnered more residencies overseas, most notably at The Cross in London and at Twilo in New York. His Balance Record Pool was awarded at the 2005 and 2006 International Dance Music Awards, while his Fade Records has helped DJ Steve Porter make a name for himself early in his career.

DJ Ronski Speed | A-Club@Akasaka | Saturday 06 April

DJ Ronski Speed or Ronny Schneider (real name) aka Sun Decade is a German DJ and producer hailing from the city of Löbau, the city where Kyau & Albert also hails from. Back in school, Ronski started Djing by playing for his classmates. He went professional in the early 90s and began working as a producer in 1997. Coming from the same city as another German trance musicians, Kyau & Albert worked well for Ronski, he signed under Kyau & Albert’s Euphonic label as soon as it was established back in 1997.

Where you might have heard him
After joining the German-based label, , Ronski’s developed a name in the world dance music scene by doing remixes of Kyau & Albert’s “Outside”, “Not With You”, Armin van Buuren ft. Justine Suissa’s “Burned With Desire”, Above & Beyond’s “Alone Tonight”, Loverush UK ft. Bryan Adams’ “Tonight In Babylon”, just to name a few. Ronski has also has been regularly featured on Paul van Dyk’s albums, like The Politics of Dancing, which was released in 2001. In 2009, he was ranked as #69 in the DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJ, and he also has his own radio show, Euphonic Sessions which is broadcast on various radio stations in the region. His sounds have been voted as Tune of the Week over 20 times by Armin van Buuren’s radio show ASOT and by Above & Beyond’s radio show TATW. He has played numerous gigs at international clubs and festivals, notably at Pacha (New York), Zouk (Singapore), Loveparade and Nature One (Germany). His most recent and highly sought after work is his “Sanity Dub”, which is released on Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats’ Volume 10.

Aeroplane | Hu’u bar | Friday 05 April

Roots
Aeroplane is a solo DJ consisting of Vito de Luca in the pilot seat. Vito de Luca was born in Belgium to Italian parents. De Luca used to own a record store when he was 19 years old, which in a way helped to develop his eclectic taste of music and incorporate it in his tracks under the guidance of his mother’s brother, who is a DJ too. The Italian-Belgian producer and DJ created Aeroplane together with his Italian buddy, Stephen Fasano in 2007, after meeting him for the first time in 2001. However, the latter chose to focus on his own project and amicably left de Luca to be the sole man in the cockpit in 2010.

Where you might have heard him
Aeroplane’s first album was We Can’t Fly (co-produced by a French producer – Bertrand Burgalat), alluded to French dance music and was released in September 2010 under the UK Wall of Sound label. Soon after, the tracks leaked online and amassed a lot of positive reviews by fans and disco music critics alike. Some of the most famous singles in it are “Mountains of Moscow”, “London Bridge” and “The Point of No Return”. Aeroplane has also done several remixes, most notably for Grace Jones’ “Williams’ Blood” and Sebastien Tellier’s “Kilometer”. He also did a very notable remix of the Friendly Fires’ “Paris” featuring Au Revoir Simone. If you’ve been to the W at all, you may notice it playing as it’s in constant rotation in their Symmetry album all across their hotels worldwide.

Why see him
Aeroplane is not just a DJ that has a mixed background, his slow disco-house sounds coming from the decks allow people on the floor to breathe and be ready for more of it. That is just how he soars. Expect some in-flight tech-house music with sprinkles of disco atmosphere when Aeroplane embarks on a night-to-dawn journey at Hu’u Bar on April 5.

DJ Patricia | Boshe | Thursday 04 April

DJ Patricia is yet another female DJ who worked her way up the ladder in the dance music scene through the hustle and bustle of Jakarta, Indonesia. Born with a mix of German and Chinese blood, one might mistake her for being a foreigner at home. She started her R&B gig while studying in Australia back in 2001 and a year later she went back to Jakarta and found herself to be one of the first female DJs in Indonesia, having been invited to perform her DJing skills at a hip hop party. In that same year, DJ Patricia met DJ Riri, who was just about to establish his own music label and soon enough DJ Patricia became part of the label – Spinach Records.

Where you might have heard her
During that period, it was quite rare to find a female DJ, let alone those with R&B and hip hop skills. To Patricia’s amazement, she performed at various first-class clubs all around the archipelago, such as Embassy, Centro, Club Monaco, just to name a few and also at several big music events, like Godskitchen, Ultimate Midnight, and Lost Chapter. Her desire to explore other genres like house was realized after four years of being the queen of the hip hop scene. Punters and critics all gave great reviews for her performances and soon after, many collaboration acts were made such as with Dewi Sandra, 3 female violinist, Duo percussion, Rejoz (The Groove) among others. She also has a great voice. She sang together with G.O.A (Andre Chillink and Derry Bunglon) in a single called “Wandering Song”, released on Jakarta Movement 2005. A few years down the road, DJ Patricia teamed up with DJ Riri to create “Grooving Me” and was released on DJ Riri’s Last Call. She also joined her DJing force with a widely-acclaimed drummer – Tyo Nugros in 2009.

Marlo Hoogstraten, or simply known as Marlo (stylized as MaRLo) aka Liquid M is a Dutch-born creative DJ and producer who has been calling Melbourne home. Since the start of his DJing career, Marlo is easily recognized for his own type of sound, simply known as the Marlo Sound. He has always believed that something fresh and out of the ordinary (like his sound) really energizes people on the dance floor.

Marlo has played at some of the biggest international parties, such as Sensation, Trance Energy (the Netherlands and Australia), Uitmarkt Festival Amsterdam (where he was invited by Cirque du Soleil to play their music in Marlo Sound), Stereosonic, Creamfields, Gatecrasher, Slinky, Godskitchen, just to name a few. His remix ft. Jano of Ferry Corsten’s “The Island” and “Punk” reached #1 and #3 respectively on the Beatport trance chart. Overall he has had five top 10 tracks on Beatport, mixed the Ministry of Sound Trance Nation vol 2 and 3 CDs, had his tunes featured on TV channels and radio stations, and has a monthly radio show. Due to his stellar progress over the years, several trance mega labels have released his latest tracks including Armada, Spinnin Records, Blackhole recordings, and Flashover. In 2012, he was listed as the #1 trance DJ in Australia, after being #2 for the same category the year before and he also ranked #11 across all genres in the Inthemix Top 50 DJ in 2010.

Trus’me’s name before his transformation into a DJ was the very plain David James Wolstencroft. Trus’me sometimes also goes under other monikers, aka ™, or simply David Wolstencroft. Manchester, a city that is arguably up there in the world of EDM was his home town and after dabbling with a few more conventional instruments, it was only natural that the city bred a worthy DJ for the masses.

Where you might have heard him
Trus’me’s rise to stardom occurred when his debut vinyl release which contained three singles, notably the hit single “Nards” smashed into the US house and disco music scenes. He further launched two more vinyl releases under the same label, Chicago’s Still Music label, titled “U Feelin’ It” (2007) and “W.A.R” (2007). This, together with strong support by the likes of Ashley Beedle, Juan Atkins, Mad Matts, Gilles Peterson and Chez Damier meant that he was getting some recognition and soon he was off from Manchester to Tokyo. In November 2007, his debut album Working Night$ finally dropped with a touch of funk and soul in it. Trus’me also has his own music label called Prime Numbers Records which was created in 2008 and focuses on underground house, techno and deep disco from both sides of the Atlantic housing names like Fudge Fingas, Nick Sinna and Linkwood. Just last month, he released his latest album called Treat Me Right, which was said to be one of best albums of the decade by Fact magazine. His remixing ability is also evident in his remixes for Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir’s “Arise”.

Delizious Devina | District – Saturday 16 March

Roots
Devina Rosandi or more affectionately known as DJ Delizious Devina is an Indonesian female DJ with Dutch-Indonesian ancestry. At the age of 17, she moved to Sydney and pursued an advanced diploma in graphic design and multimedia at Martin College at the Sydney College of Business and Hospitality. After graduating, Devina started her career in hospitality while collecting vinyl records, turntables and paintings as her hobbies. She acknowledged Robie Riviera as her inspiration to become a DJ and creating a mix of groovy electro and house. After ten years of Australian life, she moved to Indonesia and met DJ Milinka. Together, they formed Electric Barbarellas, the first Female DJ duo in Indonesia. Despite the duo splitting up in 2007, both Devina and Milinka are popular in their own right.

Where you might have heard her
As you can see, DJ Delizious Devina does not just stick to one type of sound; she always tries to keep her sounds as varied as possible. Signed with 1945MF Indonesia, Devina with her sounds behind the turntables has earned several accolades. She was awarded with the Best Local DJ Performance (The Beat Magazine Award 2005). Then, she went on to earn the titles of Best Rookie DJ (Paranoia Award 2006); Female DJ and Junior DJ of the Year (Redma Award 2007) and the Best Female DJ title (Redma Award 2009). In 2011, Devina successfully bagged the DJ of the year title at Paranoia Award and the third position on Redma Top 50 DJ of the Year. She has been featured also on numerous national newspapers, magazines and TV shows, whether as a performer, a cover model (interviews, fashion shows, and photo-taking sessions) or special guests. She also made appearances at international festivals such as Sunburst Music Festival in Malaysia. So far, DJ Devina has launched two albums titled The State of Spiritual Bliss (2009) and A Thousand Fantasy (2012) and an EP called Hearts of Gold & Higher To See From Above (2011). Like many international and multi-talented DJs, Devina also had collaborations with the crème de la crème of Indonesian music industry, such as Maia Estianty, Slank, Erwin Gutawa just to name a few. In line with those collaborations, she created “Rock Star Glam”, where she performs with Live Guitar, Live Vocal and Live MC, all together in one event.

Jesse García | Cocoon Beach Club – Saturday March 30

Jesse García is a Spanish DJ, coming from Barcelona, Spain. When one asks about his profession, he will say that he is both a professional DJ and a producer, with 20 and 10 years of experience in each of those respectively. He has gained quite a number of successes when he was under Tribal Spain and Electric Spain labels in 2003, under which Jesse released a few tracks including “Lanzarote” and “Ibiza”, his first ones to touch worldwide house music fans’ hearts.

Where you might have heard him
2008 saw him getting his first win at the Beatport Awards as the best house artist beating other nominees such as Axwell, Robbie Rivera, Dirty South to name a few. Jesse’s commendable track titled, “Off Da Hook”, released in March 2007, which peaked at Beatport chart was the one leading him to make the podium. This particular track was also in the Top 10 list of the Australian best-selling tracks chart. Even The Ministry of Sound UK included it in their famous compilation records. The same goes for Roger Sanchez, a New Yorker house music DJ, who put Jesse’s track in three of his own Release Yourself compilation albums series. Roger Sanchez’s label, Stealth Records, had also featured Jesse García as a repeat performer or more like a resident DJ in that sense in their series of club parties called Stealth Live! Having collaborated with a Grammy Award winner is indeed no mean feat for Jesse, it was Jesse’s famous track “Let’s get happy” that first attracted Roger Sanchez, who later on released it under his label which soon became a classic. Jesse has also done a few remixes, such as for Corey Andrew’s “Move your Body”, which reached number two in Beatport Top 100.

DJ Chantal Dewi aka FDJ Chantal is an Indonesian female DJ with Javanese, Moluccan, Dutch and German ancestries. If you happened to have a look at her fabulous figure and thought that this beautiful lady used to be a model, then you are right. She once represented Giorgio Armani, Chanel and DKNY on the catwalks. Her pictures can be mostly seen on the covers of various magazines including FHM Indonesia and she’s also appeared on a few television commercials. She was an actress in an Indonesian film once and a model for a video clip of an Indonesian band, Nidji.

FDJ Chantal spent many years modeling in cities like Hong Kong (Elite Hong Kong), Singapore, Bangkok (Red Models Bangkok), Seoul, Amsterdam and Jakarta (Fame Management Jakarta). She had a passion for music when she started to mix songs all by herself back in 2007, amidst her being a professional world-class model. In 2010, she took a DJing short course at 1945 Music Factory (MF) DJ school and eventually signed with 1945MF management, marking the start of her DJing career. Her combo of physical beauty and an understanding of progressive and house music are indeed good assets for her. Soon after she joined the 1945MF management, bookings requests came from all over Indonesia, including some of the top-notch clubs. Numerous music events and festivals also featured her as one of the main performers. Her name and fame in the DJ scene is often compared to other Indonesian female DJs.

Spencer Parker | Woo Bar | Saturday March 23

Spencer Parker is yet another transnational DJ, who has British and German flavors in his music. Originally hailing from London, Spencer is now based in Berlin, a city famous for its underground house and techno scene. Apart from being a DJ, he has also been a producer, an exceptional one, and when he started producing in 2005, he found his debut works being released under well-known labels, like Tsuba, Liebe*Detail, Saved, Nite Grooves, Word and Sound, Buzzin’ Fly, King Street, Ovum and Rekids.

Where you might have heard him
Parker so far has done remixes for several artists, such as for Dole & Kom (which was his first remix ever to be released under Tsuba label), and then three years later, 2009, he was tasked to remix for Rekids’ first compilation – Rekids Revolution. In his adopted hometown, Berlin, he toured all of the major clubs including Watergate, Bar 25, Arena, Wilde Renate and Weekend. Recently, he rocked some of the best clubs in the world, including Rex Club (Paris), Womb (Tokyo), Fabric (London), Barraca (Valencia) and Panorama Bar (Berlin). Spencer is currently focusing on his new separate, vinyl only label called Work Them Records, which is the main label amongst his three music production labels. He released A Gun For Hire which was released in autumn 2011 and was well received.
